Peter has a love of photography and has enjoyed being an
amateur photographer for 40 years. His beautiful photographs
available in the gallery are of waterfalls. He captures the
images and the spirit of the locations with large-format colour
photographs which are both intrinsically evocative and also
Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi was one of the most
successful of the Florentine painters. He was best know by
his nickname 'Botticelli' which means 'little barrel'.
He trained with Filippo Lippi and his style can be seen in
Botticelli's earlier works. Although most of his works are
undated, his masterpiece Adoration of the Magi has been
dated circa 1475. At this time he had the patronage of the
Medici family, several of whom appear in the work. In 1481 he
was commissioned to join the three most celebrated painters
of the day, Perugino, Rosselli and Ghirlandaio who were
painting frescoes for the Sistine Chapel.
During this era, he also painted the Primavera circa 1478 and
the Birth of Venus circa 1483. These two works hand in the
Uffizi in Florence and were likely to have been commissioned
by the Medici's. They are both hallmark pieces as they show
the most amazing attention to detail in everything on the
canvas. Later, his business became more successful and his
profitable panels were of the Madonna and Child.
In his last years, his work slowed and his popularity dwindled.
His works were did not become popular again until the pre-
Raphaelites were rediscovered in the 19th century.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH:
Skill without imagination is craftsmanship and gives us many
useful objects such as wickerwork picnic baskets. Imagination
without skill gives us modern art.
